I have a 9 month old female cockapoo who was housebroken quickly. She knows the basic commands of sit, stay, and down but has selective hearing.
She has extreme energy that is now out of control. I have tried to work on the heel command, but although she will sit next to my left leg, on the command, she will lunge leap ahead of me and there is no holding her back. I bring her back and repeat the command. She will not stop leaping and hopping off the line. This is the same pattern she has when going for a walk. She never walks…she strains on her leash and pulls me down the street.
What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to gain control?

Yes, my 9 week old puppy does the same thing but she's so young and little that I'm afraid to get too tough with her about it. So far I've done very short sessions on lead and using a treat to keep her attention. It works for a few steps but it's hard. I have to stay bent down keeping the treat in my right hand in front of her face to intice her. Tiring. Hard to look where I'm going as well. I ordered a small slip lead. I'm planning on switching to this soon in hopes of keeping her focused. I think she's to young to start with this type of lead so just trying to make walking on lead light and fun for now. How old should she be before I try the new slip lead? Thanks
