I would like to know if anyone has given their dog benadryl. My dog is 2 and he recently started scratching like crazy. I have given him oatmeal shampoo baths. That doesn't seem to help, except for right after the bath. He doesn't have fleas, or anything I can actually see on his skin. Anyone have similar trouble. I would like to avoid going tot he vet if possible. Everytime I walk in there it's 3 or 4 hundred dollars!!!

Hi there, Diane. Yes, we give our dog Benadryl from time to time, as recommended by our vet. He is sensitive to ragweed (our dog, not our vet), some days worse than others, and Benadryl stops his itching and sneezing. It also makes him quite sleepy, but that seems to be the only side effect of a single dose (a normal 25 mg tablet, or nearly 1 mg per pound of body weight). Of course, you can always call your vet just to ask what the normal dose of Benadryl is for a dog the size of yours, if you have any doubts. They should be able to give you this standard info without an appointment, as giving Benadryl (aka diphenhydramine) for minor allergies is a common practice in the canine care world. Here is some more info: www.1800petmeds.com/Diphenhydramine+(Generic+Benadryl)-prod10834.htmlHope this helps, and good luck!

Keep in mind, cockapoo's are extremely prone to ear infections which will lead to the scratching.
Zyrtec at 10mg, is what we use with our cockapoo and that seems to work the best. Since the ears are so prone to ear infection, we have a ready supply of ear cleaning solution, and ear drops from the vet.
The other area that get sensitive are cockapoos feet, as they sweat through them, and can pick up the most allergens.
keep the ears clean and dry, and hopefully you will be like mine, where the scratching has gone away.

We adopted our cockapoo from the Humane Society, and when we brought him home, he was totally itchy, scratching all the time-- it did not look fun. I asked my vet about it, and she said it was probably a food allergies, and recommended we take him of Four Legged Land Mammals and grains. (He eats fish and poultry now.) The scratching has all but stopped, and I notice that the times it flares up are when he's lucky enough get some sort of beef or bacon treat.

Oh my gosh, that was full of typos. I meant: "it was a food allergy," and "recommended we take him OFF" the mammals.
